What are parchment wall panels?
Parchment panels are decorative architectural surfaces created by applying parchment to a rigid substrate such as MDF, plywood, cabinetry, or other joinery elements.
At KareDeri, we produce these bespoke surfaces using our own goatskin parchment, which is valued for its natural tonal variation, texture, and translucency. We can also offer sheepskin and calfskin options for large projects. Parchment became particularly associated with Art Deco interiors through designers such as Jean-Michel Frank and continues to be used in both contemporary and traditional interior projects.
Our parchment panels are handmade in our Istanbul workshop and supplied internationally.
Can parchment panels be made to custom sizes and dimensions?
Yes. All of our parchment panels can be produced to custom dimensions to suit the requirements of a project. We manufacture panels to the specified length, width, and thickness and offer both natural and dyed parchment finishes. For larger projects, hides are carefully selected and matched to achieve the best possible continuity of color, tone, and texture across the installation.
What is the maximum size available for a parchment panel?
The maximum size of a parchment panel depends on the fabrication method used. If a panel is to be covered with a single piece of parchment, the maximum size of a goatskin panel is approximately 50 × 70 cm (20 × 27 inches), reflecting the natural dimensions of animal's hide.
For larger surfaces, we can produce panels using a patchwork technique, carefully joining multiple pieces of parchment across a single substrate. This approach allows us to create panels in substantially larger dimensions to suit specific project requirements.
Do parchment wall panels and furniture coverings need a protective finish?
Yes. A protective finish is generally recommended to improve durability and help preserve the appearance of the parchment, particularly on surfaces that are handled regularly. For furniture such as coffee tables, dining tables, desks, and cabinetry, a protective finish is strongly advised. It helps protect the parchment from moisture, spills, and everyday wear.
For wall panels and other low-contact architectural surfaces, a protective finish is less critical but can still provide additional protection and simplify maintenance.
We offer a range of finishing options depending on the intended application and desired appearance, including matte, satin, and high-gloss finishes.
What are the minimum order quantities and lead times for parchment panels?
We do not impose minimum order quantities for custom parchment panels. Production lead times vary depending on the scale, specifications, and complexity of each project. Estimated lead times are provided during the quotation process.
Are there different color options available for parchment wall panels?
Yes. We offer both natural and dyed parchment panels. Natural parchment highlights the tonal variation and character of the hide and is available in off-white (ivory) and antique finishes. Dyed parchment is colored during production to achieve specific tones while retaining the natural markings and character of the material.
We also offer custom dyeing services for projects requiring specific colors or design palettes. Once dyed, the parchment can be fabricated into wall panels, furniture coverings, cabinetry surfaces, and other bespoke interior elements.
Are parchment wall panels suitable for hospitality interiors?
Yes. Parchment wall panels are frequently used in hotels, restaurants, lounges, boutiques, reception areas, and other hospitality environments. Their natural texture and surface variation make them suitable for feature walls, guest suites, elevator lobbies, bars, and other spaces where materials and craftsmanship play an important role in the overall design concept. When properly finished and installed, parchment panels perform well in commercial interior environments.
How are parchment panels installed?
Parchment wall panels are typically manufactured for installation onto prepared wall surfaces or mounting systems by a professional installer, carpenter, or joinery contractor. Installation methods vary depending on the panel size, substrate, and overall project requirements. Depending on the application, panels may be installed using adhesives, mechanical fixing systems, or custom framing and backing structures. For large-scale residential, commercial, or hospitality projects, parchment panels are often integrated into custom joinery or architectural wall systems.
How do parchment panels react to humidity fluctuations and climate-controlled environments?
Parchment is a natural material and, like wood and leather, responds to changes in environmental conditions. In well-maintained interior environments with stable temperature and humidity levels, parchment panels perform well over time. As with most natural materials, prolonged exposure to moisture, rapid fluctuations in humidity, or direct sunlight should be avoided. Appropriate substrate selection, finishing, and professional installation all contribute to the long-term stability and appearance of the panels.
What substrate options do you offer for parchment wall panels?
We typically apply parchment to standard MDF or fire-retardant MDF, depending on project requirements. For most wall panel applications, we use an 18 mm MDF core to provide stability and minimize the risk of warping. Alternative thicknesses, marine-grade plywood, and other substrates can also be specified depending on the project.
Can parchment panels be produced for large-scale projects?
Yes. We work on both small bespoke commissions and larger architectural, residential, and hospitality projects. We are happy to discuss specifications, quantities, lead times, and production requirements during the quotation process.
How are parchment panels packaged and shipped?
To help ensure safe transportation, large size parchment panels are packed in custom-built protective crates designed to minimize movement and reduce the risk of damage during transit. Each crate includes a detailed packing list identifying panel numbers and dimensions to assist with handling and installation on site. We ship parchment panels internationally mostly via Fedex.
